Ask the Expert: Logo Design Q&A with Anna Smith

Updated: Mar 24, 2021

An interview with Anna Smith, creative director and founder of Hibiscus Brand Management

Question: Why do small businesses need a logo?

Answer: Many small business owners think that logos and branding are something that only large companies need or can afford. Maintaining a strong online presence can be tricky. If you replace the word “branding” with “reputation,” it will help you understand what a brand is. Think about it… What do you say when you answer the phone? How do your customers review you? What’s your company’s reputation? These are aspects of creating an impression of your company. ALL of that is your brand. The impression that you give your customers determines if they will do business with you. Take control of your reputation with a clear brand that people recognize and will connect with.

Question: What is logo design?

Answer: Logo design is an important area of graphic design, and one of the most difficult to perfect. If you are in the planning stages of a start-up business, chances are that you will mull over various name ideas and logos over a few drinks with your close friends and business contacts. Some ideas will resonate, while others will become an inside joke for you to laugh about later. As you are brainstorming, open tabs to these sites online -- Google (who is your online competition), Social Media (to see if the handle is already taken), and your state’s Secretary of State business directory. Those will help alleviate any headaches or lawsuits if you discover that another great business name and logo is similar to your branding investment.

Question: How do I come up with logo ideas?

Answer: Hibiscus Brand Management has had incredible success with naming brands and logo design. We take the time to learn about our clients and their vision for their business. Since your brand is a reflection of you, we also offer a process called the “logo diagnostics” with each of our branding clients. We help you identify the style you are going for before we even start designing. Each logo we design is a custom artwork that can be trademarked as your own. Then, to ensure that your new branding is recognized, we provide brand guidelines to help make sure your company’s marketing is reflected in products, apparel, and your online presence. ------
